Good Grief

Families and deathcare workers share how GiveWillow supports people through loss, with care and community.

Any professional working in end of life care knows that grief is not just emotional. It’s logistical and financial too. GiveWillow gives families a tool that matches the reality of modern grief. It is practical, accessible, and easy to integrate into conversations around planning and preparation.

— Kacie G., Death Doula

Flowers are nice and meal trains fill up, but giving toward something knowing that it is exactly what the family chose to honor their loved ones makes it feel even more special.

— Lauren R, Supporting Families Through GiveWillow

GiveWillow normalizes asking for and receiving support at end of life in a way that feels dignified, practical, and compassionate.

— Mikey M., Death Doula

The most beautiful thing about a platform like this is, it lets people express their love and show the best sides of humanity.

— Rebekah A., Supported Through GiveWillow

As a death doula, I often see families scrambling to cover costs or trying to manage logistics while they’re grieving. GiveWillow provides a centralized, transparent way to organize financial support.

— Kacie G., Death Doula

I just love GiveWillow and the fact that Janet created it to help people have closure and get something that they really need in a funeral service that they might not have been able to afford on their own.

Meet the Founder

Janet Turkula

When I was 22, my dad passed away unexpectedly. My siblings and I were suddenly responsible for planning and paying for his cremation while navigating overwhelming grief. He had been a single father for most of my life, and the experience exposed just how unprepared families can feel emotionally, financially, and logistically after a loss.

In the years that followed, I watched friends and acquaintances face similar situations. Communities wanted to help, but support often arrived without structure or direction. Meals piled up. Flowers filled rooms. Yet families were still left trying to navigate funeral expenses, caregiving responsibilities, travel, childcare, and day-to-day survival on their own.

That realization stayed with me.

In 2018, I began building the earliest version of GiveWillow with the belief that support during loss could be organized more thoughtfully and compassionately. Today, GiveWillow helps families coordinate meaningful, tangible support during some of life’s hardest moments.

FAQs

How is GiveWillow different from GoFundMe?add_faqsubtract_faq
GiveWillow was built specifically for loss, caregiving, and remembrance.

Rather than creating a general fundraising campaign, families create a registry that organizes meaningful support during difficult moments. Friends and loved ones can contribute meals, funeral expenses, travel, childcare, memorial costs, and other practical needs in a way that feels more personal, structured, and actionable.

While crowdfunding platforms focus primarily on raising money, GiveWillow is designed to coordinate community support more holistically during end-of-life journeys, hospice and palliative care, funerals, grief, and celebration of life planning.

In addition to funeral registries, GiveWillow also offers hospice, palliative care, pre-planning, and celebration of life registries, helping families navigate both expected and unexpected life transitions with greater clarity and support.
What is a Funeral Registry?add_faqsubtract_faq
A funeral registry is a modern way for communities to support families after a loss.

Similar to a wedding or baby registry, a funeral registry organizes specific needs so friends and loved ones can contribute in practical, tangible ways. Families can share memorial details, coordinate support, and receive help with expenses like funeral costs, meals, travel, childcare, and other day-to-day needs during an overwhelming time.

GiveWillow also serves as a centralized space for sharing updates, memories, service information, and ways for communities to show up with intention.
How do contributions work?add_faqsubtract_faq
Friends, family, and communities can contribute directly to specific needs within a registry.

Depending on the type of registry, contributions may go toward funeral expenses, meals, travel, childcare, hospice support, memorial events, or other practical forms of care. Contributors can choose exactly how they want to help, creating a more personal and organized support experience for families.
Is GiveWillow free to use?add_faqsubtract_faq
Creating a registry on GiveWillow is free for families and organizers.

When a contribution is made, a 2.2% platform fee is applied in addition to standard payment processing fees. These fees help support secure payment processing, platform operations, and ongoing improvements to the GiveWillow experience.
How do I know if GiveWillow is right for me?add_faqsubtract_faq
GiveWillow is designed for individuals and families navigating loss, caregiving, hospice and palliative care, funeral planning, or remembrance.

Whether you’re organizing support after a death, coordinating care for a loved one, planning a celebration of life, or preparing ahead, GiveWillow helps simplify communication, organize support, and bring communities together in a more intentional way.
Does GiveWillow include an obituary?add_faqsubtract_faq
Yes. Every GiveWillow registry includes a dedicated space for obituaries, memorial information, service details, photos, updates, and community communication.

GiveWillow also includes an AI-powered obituary writing tool to help families create thoughtful, personalized obituaries with greater ease during emotionally difficult moments.

The registry serves as a centralized space for remembrance, coordination, and support before, during, and after services.
